Subtle ways that automatically lead to a not-normal life

Mark Manson said it best:

"Statistically speaking, a normal person is physically unhealthy, emotionally anxious and depressed, socially lonely, and financially in debt.

So yeah, fuck being normal."

That is a damn good point Mark and with real statistics all over the world wide web, he wasn't lying.

Personally, when I think of a "normal" human, I think of someone who followed the script.

The Script is the usual: Graduate high school, have kids, money struggles, work until you die, die.

Throw in no goals of long term self care like exercise or therapy, spiritual growth, no recreational activities, and add some ineffective coping mechanism of some kind.

Nope.

That should NOT be the life we are aiming for.

What comes to your mind when you think of the "normal" person?

Truth be told, I used to think that things like practicing astrology, enjoying a childfree lifestyle, and spiritual business building made me weird until I realized the being "normal" is objectively pretty crappy.

So, let's get down to it:

Subtle ways that automatically lead to a not-normal life:

Get a hold of your anxiety.

  • Anxiety predisposes you to distorted fearful thinking, making you want to run to the most secure, boring life options available. Learn the skills you need to manage your anxiety over time.

Get debt Free.

  • If you owe money, that thing you're in debt over owns you and dictates your choices. The less debt, the freer you are to do whatever the hell you want.

Explore and enjoy being childfree.

  • The norm is to be in a rush to have kids instead of enjoying YOU. You can of course enjoy a child-filled life too, but what we are referring to today is really taking advantage of the freedom that comes with following impulses and just doing whatever you want, really. Freedom isn't the norm anymore. Follow some of those impulses within reason!

Get an off the collar job.

  • Do what I did and happily "demote" yourself to a job that works for your life, not the other way around.

Start seeing food as nutrition for your body.

  • Changing your understanding of food makes you aware of your body on a whole other level.

Meditate.

  • Developing mindfulness is one of the shortest routes to changing your life I have ever known. Mindfulness changes the literal color of the leaves in your world. Having presence is a rare ability, making you one of the most non-normative people out there.

Get friends you do not need a huge social meter for.

  • We are who our friends are. I would wager that if you had friends who didn't pressure you to be things and instead just welcomed YOU, your silence, your presence and all, you'd feel a hell of a lot more able to just be yourself.

Get an off the cuff hobby.

  • Glassblowing, hockey, tarot cards, magic, shit I don't know, but having a hobby as an adult is pretty rare these days, especially one that isn't common.

Make cool shit.

  • Seriously- the norm these days is to buy it at TJ Maxx or Pinterest. But the people who make their own stuff? Their own furniture, art, clothes, etc.? Automatically out of the norm.

Become a global citizen.

  • That can mean travel to some, that can mean trying new foods, volunteer work, and learning new languages. (Follow me on Duolingo!)

Take true advantage of your own strengths.

  • If you have a natural talent for writing, put it out there. Natural public speaker? Seek those opportunities. Girl, get after it.

Customize your self care routines.

  • Find the avenues that work for you and your self-care! Anything from cold spoon face massages, zinc paste face masks, or creating an altar. I'm serious. Whatever works for grounding and taking care of you, do it!

In this short snippet of ideas, how can you add a bit of non-normalcy to your life in the best ways?
