A New Way to Keep Direction in your New Year

I don’t set New Years Resolutions.

That crap has never worked for me TBH (But if you’re a follower of this and it works for you, keep going with it!)

The thing that HAS worked for me, is picking a “word of the year.”

This one word will guide all my decisions for 2024 and helps keep me focused throughout the year.

Let’s face it, a lot WILL happen in a year and having that one word to lean on comes in clutch SO MANY times.

The one word idea is so powerful that many people have created entire businesses on it, like Ali Edwards.

Last year, my word was “expansion”. and HUMANS, did I expand.

I can’t even begin to name the ways in which I expanded my mind, body, and soul this year.

It is obvious to myself that I am 100000% different an bigger and better than I was this time last year.

In reflection of whether or not I met this year’s word, the new one for 2024 came to me.

Picking the word is a spiritual process for me: I don’t ever force it.

I just allow it to come to me and I feel it out.

It’s like a plastic bag that gets twisted up and caught in the wind and gets stuck on my face and now I can’t ignore it.

My word for 2024 will be COMMIT.

Commit.

Commit to my goals.

My dreams.

To all the things I say I want to do and haven’t.

This resonates.

I have a whole list of stuff to commit to just at the thought of the word, like:

  • Altering my dresser (sanding and repainting it).

  • Commit to new perspectives I WANT to take on.

  • Commit to Orange Theory work outs 4x a week.

  • Commit to posting daily stories on IG.

  • Commit to posting every other day on IG.

  • Commit to offering my services on a new level.

  • Doing deep oiling treatments every 3 days and revitalizing my hair.

  • Commit to letting my anxiety-ridden short-ass nails grow.

  • Commit to building a website.

I mean…. On and on.

I think this word came to me because I want to experience more of what life has to offer, and this year, I realized that my expansion was only ever limited by MY OWN lack of commitment to things.

SO I am here to offer some practice tips if you aren’t the type to let the word come to you like a plastic bag that gets caught in your face.

  1. Think about the things you want to accomplish in 2024.

Now think of how each of these things makes you feel.

    Mindful? Content? Ease? Gratitude?

One of those can be your word.

  2. If you’re into personal development/non-fiction books, create a list of books that empower you that you’ve been wanting to read.

    What is the common theme?

    Growth? Mindfulness? Achievement? Leadership?

    This could be your word.

  3. What is something you feel you need to improve upon?

Always late? Maybe your word is “proactive”.

Do you take a lot of things personally? Maybe your word is “serenity”.

Feel like you may be a negative Nancy? Maybe your word is “optimism”.

Likely, the one area you need improvement on, bleeds into everything else.

  4. Describe the future you. Is she fearless? Poised? Directed?

ANY of these puppies can be your word.

I hope this resonates with you, my lovely reader! I’d love to hear about your word of the year, you can always DM on X or IG, or email me at mollyirizarrynp@gmail.com! I respond to every email ❤️
